Look 2 style board..

Experimenting for look 2: The Victim

FACE CHARTS

On this face chart I have made the skin pale with a bruise on the side of the jaw bone. I have based this make-up on the part of the music video when the victim realises the killer is under the bed and leaps out of bed banging his face on the bedside draws.
I have also made the eyes look sore and red as he has just woken up.

I had inspiration from Gareth Pugh's 2013 catwalk make-up for this face chart. I liked the sore red eye idea and thought I would turn the realistic look into an unrealistic fashion look.
I have also contoured the face with a greyish tone on porcelain skin so make the face structure really stand out.

Here I have again used the sore red eyes but the more realistic look as oppose to the fashion one. I have also included a head wound on the side of the head above the ear. This is for when he is again scared by the killer and leaps out of bed causing him to hit his head hard on the bed side table making it draw blood. I have included a single drip of blood running down the face too to make it look realistic and fresh.

As well as the head wound I am also going to create a deep wound on the hand, the same side of the body as the head wound. This is because as he hangs his hand over the bed during the music video, the killer licks his hand again, to then bite it causing him to leap out of bed and hitting his hand on the draws. I have added bruising and redness around wound and have paled down the skin area that it has occurred.

HAIR

I want to keep the hair simple for this look and just simply styling it into a messy bed hair look. I think this will look best for my final look as the victim has just got up in a hurry from being in bed when he is attacked by the person laying under the bed that just before had killed his dog.
I am going to put a head wound on one side of the head as he hit his head on the side of the table when leaping out of bed as fast as possible.

STYLING

For this character I didn't want to over style him as he has just got out of bed and so wouldn't have been fully dressed or showered. I chose this colour and item as it is a fairly plain and simple vest which would be tended to be worn in bed or on a casual occasion.
I ensured the vest was a baggy fit so that the styling still looked fashionable even though it is based on the victims bed wear.

MODEL CHOICE

I am going to use my friend Jack to model for the victim as he has the right shape body to wear the vest in a fashionable way. His hair is also perfect for my shoot as I wanted it to be fairly long on top in order to style it messy like bed hair. He also has it shorter on the sides which is useful for the wound on the side of the head on my face chart.

Experimenting for look 1: The Killer

FACE CHARTS

For this face chart I have paled down the face to a porcelain shade. By paling down the face I think that this gives the make-up an immediate ill look about them which will be a good look for my killer as they are found underneath a bed where there is no sunlight.

I have also made the eyes look bloodshot for a scary effect on camera which can be done by dropping a special product for the eyes that is inserted like prescription eye drops but has a red tone to it making the eye look sore.

There are sequins on the lips for some texture and to make the look more fashion orientated.

I have based the main focus on being around the eye area and lips on this face chart with bold black shapes and shadowing contouring the face.

The lip is solid black with a touch of silver shine on top in the centre area of the lips to make the lips look fuller.

I have made this look the same as the one above but have added sequins to the lips so that it will give a better effect on camera and make the look more interesting. I like the way the black shading on the cheek bones contour the face as it brings shape to the face also making it look mysterious 'in the shadows' as the killer is led in darkness under the bed.

HAIR

I have tried out this Mohawk afro hair style based on my research that I have done to help myself create this look. I have pinned the hair tightly into a pony tail and then crimped the pony tail and left it to cool. I then backcombed the crimped pony tail into a large afro and pinned it at the front back and in a straight line at the sides to create the Mohawk. It contrasts well together going from being sleek back tightly to being loose and wild on top. This gives a great texture and creates a great look when caught on camera.

STYLING

As I wanted to keep this look dark, mysterious and sexy, I have chosen to style my model in all black clothing. I chose a leather look material for a sleek look which will capture well on camera. I also added a lace chocker to wear around my models neck to make the neck seem longer making her look odd and creepy. I like the way that I have styled my final look as I think with the hair and make-up it will make it look fashionable and seductive.

 MODEL CHOICE

When deciding on my model for my first look I wanted to find a slim size 8 model that was confident in front of the camera and willing to pose. I was able to ask my friend Lauren to help me out and model for me as I think she is the perfect model for my designs.

TEST SHOOT

I went through a test shoot for my final make-up design so that I was prepared for when it was time to do my shoot. I'm pleased with the outcome of the make-up as I think it worked out better than I expected. I am pleased with the scale and accuracy of the eyebrows as I was worried about getting them even and looking symmetrical.
I didn't practise the hair style on my self as I had already done this on my dolls head.

Armani

Giorgio Armani S.p.A is an international Italian fashion house founded by Giorgio Armani, which designs, manufactures, distributes, and retails haute couture, ready-to-wear, leather goods, shoes, watches, jewelry, accessories, eyewear, cosmetics, and home interiors. The brand markets these products under several sub-labels, including Giorgio Armani, Armani Collezioni, Emporio Armani, AJ | Armani Jeans, AX | Armani Exchange, Armani Junior, and Armani/Casa. The Armani name has become synonymous with high-fashion, and is a prestigious name in the fashion industry. By the end of 2005, estimated sales of the company were around $1.69 billion.

I have looked into "Armani's" Collection of men's underwear as the photo shoots are mostly taken in a bedroom or on top of a bed linking into my project. These images of David and Victoria Beckham appear to have a sexy revealing aspect as they both sit on a bed in little clothing posing in a seductive way.

When Calvin Klein used advertisement similar to these images there was major interruption from campaigns and arguments against the ads because of sexist poses and revealing explicit images able to be seen by young children in day to day lives. This campaign was seen as a big thing which caused disruption throughout the brand for some time, although when Armani were to bring out these ads nothing was brought up about them. This mainly may be because Armani have used a well known celebrity couple sitting them in revealing clothing in seductive mannerisms, although the poses that they created weren't seen to be sexist or too much for an advertisement. This shows that the model choice in a shoot is important on the message the image is giving off, and whether the model is the right person for that particular shoot. This is something I am going to need to take into consideration when choosing my models for my two final looks as they need to show that they fit the role of who they are posing to be.

Gareth Pugh

From the age of 14 Gareth Pugh began working as a costume designer for the English National youth Theatre. He then grew his talent into more when he finished his fashion degree in 2003. He then went onto intern with Rick Owens in Paris which was a great opportunity for him. His final collection at St. Martins which he used balloons to accentuate the models' joints and limbs. This technique would soon become one of his trademarks. This attracted the attention to senior fashion editor of 'Dazed and Confused' magazine who placed one of Pugh's designs as cover image shortly after.

I really like Gareth Pugh's style of designing as they are all really in your face designs. The bold black shapes against the silver on the outfits create great shape to the model making the eye work on all areas of the clothing.

This collection has given me a lot of inspiration for my styling in one of my shoots as I want to keep the image looking sleek and mysterious.

The Black Swan

The Black swan is a good inspirational film for my project as the make-up is perfect for my first final look I am going to design. I have been looking at dark unique make-up from previous shoots, films and music videos and I like the idea of having dark make-up sweeping back from the eyes.

'The Black Swan' is a fairly recent film about a ballet school that creates an end of year show called 'Black Swan'. Throughout the film we feel the dancers pain through their acting, but more importantly the hair and make-up.

I found this image from a blogging website called mazenabusrous.com. The make-up artist has recreated the Black Swans make-up, personalising it in their own way by making the eye make-up a lot heavier whereas the original make-up on the film was a lot daintier and precise. I really like the way it has been designed as I think the heavy blackness works really well with the solid red lips that has a gloss added to the centre for the bigger look. I also like the angle that the image has been took at as I think this is effective as the focus is sharpest on the eyes and the lips.

This image on the left has been created with inspiration of the Black Swan. This is obvious with the dark black makeup applied thick to the eyes and the lips. The feathers on the eyebrows also reference a swan which brings attention to the image. I like how the neck looks as though it has been stretched from the angle the photo has been taken, or this may have also been created with a photo editing programme.

I created my own interpretation of the Black Swan's makeup. I started off with just the thick black and white lines starting from the inside of the nose out past the end of the eyebrow. The base is a pale foundation mixed with a small amount of the Illamasqua white foundation to make a paler tone.
I then added a cross hatch on each outer eye on the side of the face to give the makeup more of a textured feature.

Alex Box Rankin

Alex Box is a fine artist and visionary before a makeup artist. The woman uses the visage as a canvas to which she applies layers of non-conforming techniques which result in mind blowing avant-garde face paintings. I really like her work and when looking at her work I get an image of what she see's being real life.

I really like the texture and patterns that she uses throughout her different looks creating shapes with both the face and the hair in order to bring some imaginary to life.

I have created this face chart with inspiration from Alex Box Rankin's makeup image at the top of this post on the right and also the second black and white image of swirled patterns on the female models face. I really like these designs as I think the bold black precise lines stand out amazingly on camera.

valentino ready to wear 2013

I really like the first two outfits in this 'ready to wear' autumn/winter collection by Valentino. The black leather has given me inspiration for my final shoot for the woman under the bed as I think it gives the character/model a dark mysterious side to them. The leather material glides down the catwalk in a discrete manor and I think that this sort of outfit styling would work well for my shoot as I want my model to be discrete when she's hiding under the bed in the music video.

Yves Saint Laurent Autumn Winter Collection 2012/13

This catwalk has given my inspiration for my 1st look; the woman under the bed. The collection by YSL has been created using black leather sheen materials and tight slim fitting clothing giving the models an edgy look.
Every model on this catwalk has a black lip to go with the gothic theme. I think that this gives the styling a great finish and makes the look. I also like the models hair the way it has been scraped back into a sleek style as it makes the image of the models easy on the eye to perform the collection.

Experimentation

Experimenting with paint

I drew and painted this image of a pair of lips with a tongue licking the top set of teeth. My aim of this experimental painting was to help me decide how I wanted the lips of my model to appear in my final shoot. I want this shoot to be focused mainly on the lips. To do this I need to have a pose for my model to do which involves the tongue out to reference the name of the Urban Legend my shoot us based upon. I like the bold colours in this painting and it enabled me to see where to highlight the most on the lips to enable full volume.

Film References

ALIEN 3

'Alien 3'  is a 1992 science fiction film, and the debut of director David Fincher. It is the third instalment in the Alien franchise, and the second sequel to Ridley Scott's 1979 film Alien. Continuing after the events in Aliens (1986), the ejected pod from Colonial Marine spaceship Sulaco crash-lands on a prison-run refinery planet, killing everyone aboard except Lieutenant Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver). Unknown to Ripley, an Alien egg was aboard the ship. The Alien is born inside the prison and begins a killing spree.

After watching this film I felt I could reference it to my theme 'humans can lick too' based on the scene shown in the trailer above when the Alien's face it close up to the actress. This is a moment of pure fear as the Alien breaths its breath onto her face as a further mouth appears from inside it's first mouth!

Throughout my music video I want my looks to give off the same tension and suspense as we see in this film. In order to do this I need to find poses for my models to use during the shoot in order to feel how they're meant to feel during the video.

LESBIAN VAMPIRE KILLERS

Lesbian Vampire Killers is a 2009 British comedy horror film written by Stewart Williams and Paul Hupfield, produced by Steve Clark-Hall and directed by Phil Claydon.
After several years in development hell, the project was picked up by director Phil Claydon. Claydon describes the film as influenced by Ghostbusters with a mix of Hammer Horror and Universal's monster movies. Referring to the special effects used in the film he said "I covered James in vampire gunk at every opportunity because that made me laugh", since the Vampires turn into slime rather than dust or bursting into flames like other vampire stories.

It is set in Norfolk, based around the village of Cranwich which is portrayed in the film as Cragwich, but was filmed outside London on location at Luton Hoo and in Three Mills film studios in Bromley-by-Bow. The film is a tongue-in-cheek homage to the classic Hammer Horror films and was originally slated to be the first "new" Hammer film. This did not come to pass and it was ultimately Alliance and Momentum Pictures along with AV Films who finally green lit the project.

The way that the vampires in this film have been labelled as 'lesbian vampires' shows humour, but also makes the film sound as though it could have sexual scenes as it is made clear and bold in the film title. I have chosen to reference this film as I want to base my first look on creepy role with a sexy twang. As I want to add a wound on my victim models hand I want this to be from the killer attacking the hand once the victim realises that it's in fact not his dog that is licking his hand.

BLACK SWAN

Black Swan is a 2010 American psychological thriller and horror film directed by Darren Aronofsky and starring Natalie Portman, Vincent Cassel, and Mila Kunis. The plot revolves around a production of Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake ballet by a prestigious New York City company. The production requires a ballerina to play the innocent and fragile White Swan, for which the committed dancer Nina (Portman) is a perfect fit, as well as the dark and sensual Black Swan, which are qualities embodied by the new arrival Lily (Kunis). Nina is overwhelmed by a feeling of immense pressure when she finds herself competing for the part, causing her to lose her tenuous grip on reality and descend into a living nightmare.

I have referenced this film purely because of the make-up used throughout the film for the final show. I like how the main focus is on the outside of the eyes with the black and white feathery pattern. This looks effective the way that it seems the white sections between the black looks as though its highlighted in the light. I think that this make-up will look good for my first look (the killer) as I want to make the make-up quite dark to give an edgy, sexy vibe.

TWIGHLIGHT

Twilight is a series of four vampire-themed fantasy romance novels by American author Stephanie Meyer. It charts a period in the life of Isabella "Bella" Swan, a teenage girl who moves to Forks, Washington, and falls in love with a 104-year-old vampire named Edward Cullen. The series is told primarily from Bella's point of view, with the epilogue of Eclipse and Part II of Breaking Dawn being told from the viewpoint of character Jacob Black, a werewolf.

I think that Twilight is a good film reference as the vampires in the film aren't made to look scary or evil, but instead beautiful, friendly characters.

Not only does this film reference the killer for my shoot, but also the victim. The make-up created in Twilight is similar to how I am planning the make-up for my victim shoot. I want a pale face, dark circles around the eyes to make them seem sore, and also the hair of Edward (one of the characters in twilight) is how I have planned my look.

Kiss

'HEAVENS ON FIRE'

I think that I can relate to this music video slightly within my urban legend story as Gene Simonds aka 'Slash' sticks out his tongue a lot throughout. Slash's extra ordinary long tongue has made him well known for being a rock star and has enabled him to have his own signature look.

I like the boldness of the black sharp shapes around the eyes as it brings attention mainly to this section of the face. The shape that has formed on the face flows well with the outline of the tongue when he sticks it out of his mouth. This is important as it has given the make-up a structure.

Initial Ideas For Look No.2

The Victim

As I am going to be using a male model for my second look I have used only males on my moodboard so that I can focus a lot deeper into the hair styles/look that I am going to create. I am going to try and find a model with hair the length that I have looked at on this style board as I want to be able to mess it up and make it look as though he has bed hair. I like the messy 'bed head' look as these catwalk images on my style board above show, as my victim character is in bed during my music video. I think that if I was to style this character's hair anymore then it would take away the believable style of the video as he has just been in bed so won't look perfect.

I want to keep the make-up quite simple and tired looking as this character has just got out of bed in the scene that I want to build my look upon. I like the pale face with small bags under the eyes as this proves that 'less is more'. I think that this style of  make-up like the top left image shows from one of Gareth Pughs Catwalks gives a great effect for a gothic but fashionable look. Because I need to focus on skills that I have recently learnt, I want to include a wound either on the face, head or on the hand. I like the idea of a large open wound on the hand as the person under the bed licks the hanging hand to then later go on and bite it once the victim has realised what is there. This would have a great effect on the camera with a specific pose.

I want to keep the styling on this look fairly simple as I want to make the video seem as realistic as possible but still fashionable. As I am going to base this look on when the character gets out from his bed he needs to be styled in casual clothing which references bed wear. I am going to keep the colour scheme with plain colours so that the make-up and hair is the main focus to this image.

Evanescence

'BRING ME BACK TO LIFE'

I thought that this video would help me for my second look, the owner of the dog; the victim. I want to make this model look terrified at what they have just seen and want to make the audience feel they're upset and pain. I like the movement of this video as it is slow and flows well with the tone of the song. The wind through the windows allowing the curtains to blow is a good effect to the story of this music video as it emphasis's the cold and loneliness of the lyrics to the song.

The way in which she moves around the bed lifting her chest before her body gives a feel of death about it and gives it a creepy edge. The setting of this music video is a good inspiration for my chosen urban legend story 'Humans can lick too' as that is set in a bedroom.

The make-up and hair is simple for this music video and the outfits stays the same throughout. With it being quite an emotional song and video written with a suggestion of death when she sings 'bring me to life'. I think that this makes it more realistic the fact that she does look natural the whole way through the video as it makes it seem like more of a story rather than a random mix up of scenes.

Initial Ideas For Look No.1

I liked the idea of having dark, mysterious make-up for my first look drawing a lot of emphasis around the eyes. This look will be for the Killer character that lies under the bed, kills the dog and licks the hand. I want to give the music video a edgy feel to it so that the audience will feel intrigued to carry on watching and listening. After watching Rihanna's two music video's I really liked the idea of keeping the make-up for the killers look quite dark and dramatic, especially focusing around the eye area. I also like the dark lips. I think that this gives it a striking feel as it makes you really focus on the sharpness of the black lines.

For my first look, I have looked at many different hair styles that could be possible inspiration for my final designs. I like the big volume styles as I think that they give the best effect on camera. My favourite style out of all of these images on my style board is the Mohican style. I like this as I think that it would have a great outcome for the final look as it will make the killer look edgy and suspicious.

As the killer led under the bed needs to be wearing something quite discrete and dark making it hard to be seen when in the bedroom, I have chosen to look at all black clothing, and a leather material so that it looks sleek and shady. I am going to look into the styling of this look quite a lot as I don't want to miss out on the important details. I really like the look of the long black pointed nails that is seen in on of the images above. I think that they look really interesting against tight clothing as they are long and slender giving the killer a dramatic look.

Rihanna

'DISTURBIA'

I really like Rihanna's music video for her song 'Disturbia' as it is in a dark scene with edgy movements. Right from the start as it opens up into the song a creepy noise is made by a piano making it intriguing to watch and listen and creating an amazing effect. I thought the sharp, sudden movements and jolting actions made from the start by Rihanna herself and other dancers fitted really well with the song and scenery. Although I want to base my music video on a drum and bass genre song I think that this sort of scene would work well for what I imagine my final looks to be.

The contact lenses that Rihanna wears with one of the outfits works really well with the theme as she is made to look like a zombie. The filming of the video was also interesting in the sense that it jolts in parts of the song which fits really well.

I loved the amount of outfit changes she has throughout the video as it has given me a lot of inspiration for my two final looks. The film scenery has also given me inspiration for the backgrounds of my final shoots. I really like the section of the video when there is a blank wall with Rihanna, a couple of dancers and some simple old looking lighting either side of them. This makes the whole scene look nervy and in suspense.

The make-up in this video is amazing with the blackness around the eyes and the dark contouring up Rihanna's cheek bones. I also like how the make-up artist has made her look dirty when she is tied up in the dark dirty scene.

'WHO'S THAT CHICK'

Rihanna's other music video for 'Who's that chick' has also the same sort of feel to it as 'Disturbia' did as the outfits are similar, although the song is more quirky and upbeat in this one giving it a bit of a different view on it.

I noticed on one of the outfit changes in this music video, Rihanna again has the whitened out contact lenses in her eyes. I really like this effect and think it fits in really well with this general 'creepy' theme.

MAD HOUSE

Rihanna used this song as an introduction into her album 'Rated R' to give her audience a quick insight and see what they should be expecting from the album. From the opening of the song it begins with creepy music. She has used small clips from her other music videos mixed together to create the introduction video for this song which I think has given a great effect and gives you a quick intake as to what to expect.

Moodboard

Humans Can Lick Too

Here I have created a blog on the famous Urban Legend story 'Humans can lick too'. An urban legend is a questionable, second hand story, alleged to be true and just plausible enough to be believed, about a horrific, embarrassing, ironic, or intensifying series of events that supposedly happened to a person. 'Humans can lick too' is one of the classic and famous legends told.

A young girl named Lisa was left alone on several accounts as her parents worked late. Her parents bought her a dog to keep her company. One night Lisa was awoken by a constant dripping sound. She got up and went to the kitchen to turn off the tap properly. As she was getting back into the bed she stuck her hand under the bed and the dog licked it. The dripping sound continued, so she went to the bathroom and turned off the tap properly in there, too. She went back to her bedroom and stuck her hand under the bed, and the dog licked it again. But the dripping continued, so she went outside and turned off the taps out there. She came back to bed, stuck her hand under it, and the dog licked it again. The dripping continued, drip, drip, drip. This time she listened and located the source of the dripping — it was coming from her cupboard. She opened the cupboard door, and there was her dog hanging upside down with its neck cut, and written on the window on the inside of the cupboard was,
"HUMANS CAN LICK TOO!!!"

Throughout this project I am going to be researching more into this particular Urban Legend and how it's message effects the listeners. I am going to use this story as a guide towards my two final shoots for a modern music video. I will create a look for two models (1 Male, 1 Female) using inspiration from this story.
