The Black Swan

The Black swan is a good inspirational film for my project as the make-up is perfect for my first final look I am going to design. I have been looking at dark unique make-up from previous shoots, films and music videos and I like the idea of having dark make-up sweeping back from the eyes.

'The Black Swan' is a fairly recent film about a ballet school that creates an end of year show called 'Black Swan'. Throughout the film we feel the dancers pain through their acting, but more importantly the hair and make-up.

I found this image from a blogging website called mazenabusrous.com. The make-up artist has recreated the Black Swans make-up, personalising it in their own way by making the eye make-up a lot heavier whereas the original make-up on the film was a lot daintier and precise. I really like the way it has been designed as I think the heavy blackness works really well with the solid red lips that has a gloss added to the centre for the bigger look. I also like the angle that the image has been took at as I think this is effective as the focus is sharpest on the eyes and the lips.

This image on the left has been created with inspiration of the Black Swan. This is obvious with the dark black makeup applied thick to the eyes and the lips. The feathers on the eyebrows also reference a swan which brings attention to the image. I like how the neck looks as though it has been stretched from the angle the photo has been taken, or this may have also been created with a photo editing programme.

I created my own interpretation of the Black Swan's makeup. I started off with just the thick black and white lines starting from the inside of the nose out past the end of the eyebrow. The base is a pale foundation mixed with a small amount of the Illamasqua white foundation to make a paler tone.
I then added a cross hatch on each outer eye on the side of the face to give the makeup more of a textured feature.
